Since the product was initially developed for entrepreneurs with little or no finance background, I wanted to design a welcoming user interface with intuitive controls that could be used with mouse or touch. Adding dynamically adjusting visual graphs that responded to the user input was also a factor in creating that surprise and variability that motivates users to use a product.

The inspiration for this UI came from my music background. I've composed for film and games for over a decade and the UI design for music hardware and software instruments is engaging and creative. I adopted the approach for user input after an initial build of the product looked too much like a spreadsheet. It simply created too much friction with the user as they had to click on field inputs to type in values. It felt very old and tedious. By transforming the UI into a knobs and slider interface, we created more surprise and stickiness with the user and also spoke to the idea that the product was meant not for CFOs but for startup entrepreneurs who just needed the help to get their forecasts done.
